How to Solve a Clue by Pattern

Crossword grids give you letters before they give you answers. Every crossing entry you finish locks in another square, and those fixed squares are usually enough to identify the answer even when the clue itself stays stubborn.

Pattern examples

S?L?N?
Six squares, S first and L third
??ING
Any five-letter word ending in ING
A??LE
A first, LE last, two unknowns

Combine the pattern with the other filters when a clue is still ambiguous. Excluding letters that crossings have ruled out often cuts a list of eighty candidates down to two or three plausible answers.

Crossword Helper FAQ

How do I use the pattern field?

Type the letters you already know and use a question mark for each unknown square. For a six-letter clue where you know the first and fourth letters, enter S??L?? and BlazeWords returns every word that fits those positions.

Can I search without knowing any letter positions?

Yes. Leave the pattern blank and use the starts with, ends with, contains, or length filters on their own. Every filter you fill in is combined, so you can narrow a clue from any angle.

What does the excluded letters box do?

It removes any word that uses those letters. It is useful when crossing entries have already ruled letters out of the grid.

Should I use common words or the full dictionary?

Start with common words for everyday crosswords and quick puzzles. Switch to the full dictionary for cryptic grids, championship puzzles, and obscure fill.
